about witchcraftWitchcraft has many different paths (much like there are many types of Christians - Catholics, Anglicans etc). The one that is currently enjoying the most popularity is Wicca. Wicca is a Pagan religion meaning that Wiccans feel love for and a connection with nature and see it as sacred. Wicca honours the divine concept of Goddess and God and recognises that this divinity can exist wthin women and men. Wiccans celebrate eight religious festivals a year, called Sabbats and these are based on the passing of the seasons and agricultural cycles, like the sowing and harvesting of crops, and astronomical events, like the solstices and equinoxes. We also experience the Lunar phases as important times to celebrate our spirituality, particularly on the full moon. Some Wiccans do not use the word, Witch to describe themselves, but many do, especiallywomen. This is seen as an attempt to 'reclaim' the word as it has become associated with negative stereotypes of women. When a woman calls herself a Witch she is confronting patriarchal societies' prejudice towards independent and empowered women. Witchcraft is a fascinating, logical, magickal, holy and sexy religion that is nature worshipping and Goddess-oriented. All good things in these stressed out, ecologically damaged, patriarchal times. Witchcraft is also the fastest growing spiritual path in the western world – offfically this has been recognised by recent Census reports in Australia, the UK and the USA. :: my wicca'd wicca'd waysI have been a practicing Witch for sixteen years. I 'came out of the broom closet' about six years ago in an article for Australian Rolling Stone. Prior to that the only idea the public had about my spiritual interests was through my song lyrics and it was known that I was interested in the occult but not that I was actually a Witch. The decision to write my first Australian book, 'Witch - A Personal Journey' came about after a magazine article I had been working on for Australian Marie Claire was 'killed off' due to a rival magazine doing a 'copycat' piece. The article was a nine page report feature on Witchcraft and when the magazine could no longer go on to publish it, I knew I had to do something with all the information I had gathered, so the idea to write a book on Witchcraft was born. There are many 'How To Practice Witchcraft' books on the market and at the time I felt that it would be redundant to write yet another one, so I decided to make mine very personal - one that could show how Witchcraft can be integrated into everyday life in a practical way. I wrote about difficult experiences that Witchcraft helped me through as well as happier times that my Witchcraft enhanced. Over the year that I started putting my notes together word got out that I was writing a book on the Craft. I had many fans coming up to me at gigs with my (then) band Def FX and asking me specific questions about Witchcraft. I took note of these and when I was deciding what chapters to have in my book I thought of all those questions and I tried to make sure that the answers would be covered. Initially the most common questions were, "Do you hex people?", "Can you make people fall in love with you?", "Do you worship Satan?", "Do you take drugs when you do magick?", "Do you worship in the nude?" All these questions were quite negative and stemmed from the Hollywood stereotype of the 'evil witch'. I answered them all and lots more in 'Witch-A Personal Journey'. In 2001 I wrote a third book - for teenagers – called "Life's A Witch-A Handbook for Teen Witches." This was in answer to the many requests I was getting from teens who were watching tv shows like CHARMED and were enchanted with the idea of creating real magic in their lives. Around this time my books were published in the UK and USA and all of a sudden what had been an incredibly private part of my life became world known! I started travelling back and forth between Australia, the UK and the USA talking about Witchcraft on TV and radio, doing public workshops, lectures and personal appearances. My first two Australian releases were edited into one volume for international release and called, "Witch-A Magickal Journey" (January 2001). This was followed by "Seven Days to A Magickal New You" (December 2001)which was a short and fun introductory guide to putting a bit more magick into our everyday lives. Then I was invited to do a television show in the UK about helping people with their love and sex lives by using magick. The show was called 'Sexy Spells' and it was a lot of fun and I had terrific feedback from people who watched and enjoyed it. I decided to put all the advice and spells that I had created for the show into a book – hence the 2002 international release, "Magickal Sex-A Witches Guide to Beds Knobs and Broomsticks". My Australian Teen Witch book, "Life's A Witch" has been re-edited and renamed, "Witchin'-A Handbook for Teen Witches" and was released 2002/2003 in the UK/USA. I moved to the USA in December 2002 to explore the opportunities in the entertainment industry that were being facilitated by my book's success. As much as Witchcraft has become a promoted and public part of my life, I never see it as my 'job' first and foremost I am an entertainer in the fields of television, radio and music and a writer. It took a while for me to be comfortable with being so 'out' as a Witch especially after keeping it so private for so long. But I feel in my heart that it is part of my individual spiritual evolution to now share what I've learnt - and continue to learn - with others who are interested. So I am excited to be starring in Sci Fi Channel USA's 2004 reality series, "Mad Mad House" and also developing my own television show based on my Craft with the aim to help people experience more magick in their lives. I am also planning to recreate the 'Spellcasting' radio show I had for two years in Australia. Another amazing thing that happened from my move to Los Angeles is that I have formed my first Coven here in Hollywood and have written a book documenting our creation and growth called "The Coven, Making Magick Together". It was published October 2003 by Random House Australia and is due for release in USA/UK soon. To wrap it up here I have to say that now I am based in the Northern Hemisphere, I am thrilled to be meeting so many more people and sharing in their lives and magickal experiences . My personal Witchcraft continues to evolve as I connect with others and travel on my life's journey.
